During the last week of March, DAFNE – lead partner of the project – hosted an inspiring two-day training event dedicated to equipping nature guides with the skills and knowledge necessary to promote accessible tourism in natural areas. The event was designed with the other partners to provide a comprehensive learning experience through a first theoretical learning session and a practical outdoor training..

Day 1: March 20, 2025 – Theoretical training in Genova (at Cooperativa Condiviso)

The first day was a first theoretical part of the training and it was organized during the same day both in Italy and in Northern Macedonia, featuring:

  • Theoretical guide on joelette operation – CAI Sezione Ligure-Genova
  • Outdoor experience with Chiara Giordani & Lorenzo Pagnoni
  • Disability language insights – Diego Longinotti
  • Alternative communication tools – Elisa Succio
  • Sensory disability insights – Eleonora Villa
  • Online training with KOAN Consulting on the DIANA Toolkit – A valuable session for deeper insights and practical learning.

The day concluded with valuable discussions and networking opportunities, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among participants.

Day 2: March 29, 2025 – Practical outdoor training along il Sentiero dei Forti

The second day of training was focused on practical outdoor experiences tailored for individuals with different types of disabilities, providing nature guides with hands-on experience in accessible tourism practices:

  • Morning: Excursion with Joelette for individuals with motor/sensory disabilities: A flat trail along Via delle Baracche, offering views of Val Bisagno, the fortifications, and the Genova-Casella railway route.

Training: Joelette handling and guidance led by CAI trainers. The CAI Ligure Genova and Arenzano provided trained volunteers to teach nature guides (GAE) how to assemble and operate a joelette. Two individuals with physical disabilities participated, using both an electric and a manual joelette. Additionally, two visually impaired individuals took part, guided by GAE members. These participants played the role of expert trainers, offering firsthand insights. Special glasses and blindfolds were also used to help GAE members experience navigating the trail with impaired vision.

12:30 – 2:00 PM: Lunch break, open to participants from both the morning and afternoon activities.

Afternoon: Hike designed for individuals with cognitive and psychological disabilities. Starting from Via delle Baracche, reaching the Ostaia de Baracche refreshment point before taking the Sentiero delle Farfalle. This scenic route leads to a ridge path toward Forte Puin. The trail continues with panoramic views over Val Bisagno, approaching Forte Sperone before turning right towards the “Cancello dell’Avvocato” gate. From here, the route follows Via del Peralto back to the heliport.

Training: Seven participants from Alfapp, along with their caregivers, and one additional participant with a cognitive disability and their guide joined the activity. The focus in the afternoon was on tactile, auditory, and olfactory sensations, enhancing participants’ sensory experiences. Additionally, efforts were made to structure a path using Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) techniques.

This two-day event proved to be a valuable experience for all involved, fostering growth, collaboration, and innovation in the field of accessible tourism. We are thrilled with the positive feedback received and look forward to organizing more such events in the future.
